CORPORATE MASTERS TAKES OFF!
Wednesday, June 20, 2012
With thanks to writer about zombies and science fiction, Scott Edelman, Corporate Masters has gone viral! Mr. Edelman saw my work at Artomatic and liked it so much he wrote a blog post about it and sent Boing Boing a tip. Cory Doctrow was kind enough to write an article “Corporations Are People, Sarah Guthrie Paints their Portraits,”and off it took! It’s been tweeted and retweeted and added to more sites, like Common Dreams. I am honored to see my art inlcuded in the important conversation about the role corporations have in our lives and culture.
The Supreme Court ruling, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, gave corporations similar legal rights as human beings. What does it mean that a corporation is now a person? What does it mean for art-making? Wouldn’t a corporation want an iconic portrait to immortalize itself? What image is the face of a corporation? Who are the art patrons today? Can logos be sampled in painting as in music? What does it mean to “own” an image or motto?
The corporations selected are large multi-nationals that have been highlighted in the news recently: for legally paying less in federal income tax than you and me; for market domination; for bringing the economy to the brink of disaster.
